Additional Services

Alongside our core design disciplines, Groundline provides a range of specialist engineering services that support the full lifecycle of overhead line and underground cable infrastructure from ground to asset management.

What We Do

Structural Design

Groundline's Structure Design service delivers robust, optimized solutions for transmission infrastructure using advanced tools like the Power Line Systems suite and SPACE GASS. We design and optimize all structure types used in overhead line infrastructure; lattice towers, guyed and self-supporting poles, and everything in between, with our structural engineers working within integrated project teams to ensure structural and electrical design assumptions are aligned from the outset, in accordance with industry standards and asset owner requirements.

  • Lattice tower design and optimization, guyed and self-supporting, new designs and modifications.

  • Tower strengthening and detailed connection design, including fabrication drawings.

  • Pole structure design; wood, steel, concrete, composite, fiber-reinforced, and stobie, including multi-pole configurations.

  • Structural loading in accordance with industry standards and asset owner requirements.

  • Load trees, load charts, and structural geometry design.

  • Structure procurement specifications, including outlines, geometry, and attachment plate design.

  • Full-scale structure prototyping and load testing.
Foundation Design

Foundations are one of the most consequential elements of any overhead line structure and one of the most variable. Groundline's Foundation Design service delivers tailored solutions for all structure types, including lattice towers, guyed towers, and direct-embedded or base plate-connected poles, designing for a wide range of ground conditions and environments, including steep slopes, soft ground, poor soil, and high-water tables. We also provide integrity assessment of existing foundations using proven non-destructive methods, including Transient Dynamic Response (TDR) technology for piled foundations, helping ensure transmission structures remain secure and resilient under varying environmental and operational conditions.

  • Foundation design for lattice towers, guyed towers, direct-embedded poles, and base plate connected poles.

  • Pad and chimney, long pile (belled and un-belled), rock anchor, and large pad designs.

  • Design for difficult terrain:  steep slopes, soft ground, poor soil, and high water tables.

  • Integrity and as-built assessment of existing piled foundations using Transient Dynamic Response (TDR) technology.

  • Management of geotechnical investigations.

  • Foundation upgrades and strengthening design.
Verification & Design Assurance

Independent verification and peer review are not overhead; they're insurance. Groundline provides third-party verification services, carried out by independent experts, that reduce the risk of costly mistakes and oversights and provide defensible evidence that a design is safe, code-compliant, and constructible, remaining sound long after we've gone. With our global reach and ongoing investment in training and upskilling, we bring a comprehensive understanding of local standards together with international best practice on every project.

  • Independent verification of structural, electrical, and foundation design.

  • Peer review of design documentation, calculations, and construction packages.

  • Design assurance across project lifecycle from concept through to IQA.

  • Standards compliance review across IEC, IEEE, CIGRE, and jurisdiction-specific codes.

  • Technical audit support for network owners and asset managers.
Site Engineering & Construction Support

Our site engineering capability is rooted in construction experience; We started on the ground, and that knowledge shapes everything we do, including how we design. Groundline has extensive engineer-to-contract, project engineer, and construction management experience, and for projects where on-site technical support matters, we provide robust, accurate operational support that keeps construction moving safely and to programme.

  • Pulling calculation checks and rigging load calculations.

  • Engineering field checks and structural capacity checks.

  • Plant and equipment compliance checks.

  • Stringing and sagging management methodologies, machine site setup, conductor running tensions, critical observation spans.

  • Uplift support and procedural and quality assurance documentation.
  • As-built verifications and documentation.

  • Line route survey and staking; structure set-out pegging.

  • Lattice tower stub setting and pole base plate engineering support.

  • Construction and maintenance structural and electrical clearance checks.
Asset Management

Groundline helps network owners understand the condition of their assets and translate that into an informed understanding of risk, so you can run a safe, reliable, and cost-effective network. We support the industry's move away from simple age, and condition-based assessment towards a holistic approach aligned with ISO 55000, encompassing asset reliability, asset classes, and network-wide performance.

  • Feeder and circuit desktop reviews.

  • Environmental studies and land use change assessments.

  • High-definition photographic inspections:  ground-based and aerial (helicopter and UAV).

  • Transient Dynamic Response (TDR) foundation testing and analysis.

  • Earth impedance testing of transmission line structures.

  • Condition assessment and risk-based prioritization.

  • Asset strategy development and lifecycle planning.
Advisory: Built on experience not theory

We see ourselves as a strong advisory partner, not just a design consultancy. We don't simply accept a brief and draw up a solution, we take the time to think through the implications, question whether there's a better way to do it, and work toward a design that's genuinely practical and constructable. We'll guide you through all of that thinking, not just hand over a set of drawings at the end of it.

That mindset matters more than ever. The energy transition is putting more pressure on transmission networks than at any point in their history, aging assets, rising demand, and a global investment shortfall in poles, wires, and storage that's leaving utilities exposed. Meeting that challenge takes more than engineering; it takes people willing to challenge assumptions and help you plan for what's actually coming. We work alongside utilities, asset owners, and regulators on the hard questions: how to extend the life of existing infrastructure rather than defaulting to costly new-build, how to prioritize investment when budgets don't stretch to everything, and how to plan networks that can flex as demand and technology shift.

Drawing on two decades of hands-on transmission engineering across four countries, we bring an independent, practical perspective, grounded in what actually works in the field, not just what looks good on paper. It’s advice built on experience, not theory.
